Materials Lab Red Pigment Workshop

Workshop

Harvard Art Museum
32 Quincy Street, Cambridge, MA

Explore red pigments in this hands-on workshop, led by the museums’ research curator for conservation and technical studies, Francesca Bewer. Inspired by the special exhibition Mark Rothko’s Harvard Murals, Bewer will lead participants through an investigation of some of the many types of red pigment used in art.

The workshop will take place in the museums’ Materials Lab, a new space designed to encourage the investigation of materials and techniques used in works of art. What kinds of choices and challenges do materials pose for artists as well as scholars and conservators? How does a more nuanced appreciation of art-making affect the aesthetic experience? Different materials will be explored through hands-on experimentation and close looking at select objects in the galleries.

The event will be held in the Materials Lab, Lower Level.

$15 materials fee. To register and pay in advance, please call 617-495-1440 or stop by the museums’ admissions desk. Space is limited to 15 participants. Minimum age of 14.
