Seminar

Harvard Art Museums
32 Quincy Street, Cambridge, MA

This event is at capacity.

This seminar will look at the riches and nuances of the salted paper photography collection at the Harvard Art Museums. Curatorial and conservation staff will present new knowledge about the process, drawn from a recently completed survey of the salted paper photographs across Harvard University’s collections. Contemporary with the daguerreotype, salted paper prints were a refinement of William Henry Fox Talbot’s photogenic drawings and the direct ancestor of modern analog photography. The session will be led by Makeda Best, the Richard L. Menschel Curator of Photography; Penley Knipe, the Philip and Lynn Straus Senior Conservator of Works of Art on Paper and head of the Paper Lab; and Laura Panadero, the Craigen W. Bowen Paper Conservation Fellow.

The seminar will take place in the Art Study Center, Level 4.

Free admission, but capacity is limited to 15 and registration is recommended. To register, please email am_visitorservices@harvard.edu.

Please arrive 15 minutes before the start of the program to allow sufficient time to sign in at the Art Study Center reception desk. Note that there is a wait list for this program; spots unclaimed by 11am will be released to those on the wait list. Please be prepared to present a photo ID.

Lockers are available on the Lower Level, Level 1, and Level 4 to check bags, coats, umbrellas, and any food or drink.
