Descriptions

Description
Circular basin with angled rim; buff earthenware with abstract decoration painted in black slip and white pigment; lightly burnished before firing. Majiayao culture, Majiayao type. From the upper Yellow River valley region; Gansu, Qinghai, or Ningxia province.
Commentary
Compare to:
Basin of similar shape with closely related bichrome painted designs excavated in 1975 from a Majiayao site in Dujiatai, Yongdeng county, Gansu province, now in the Gansu Provincial Museum. See Zhang Pengchuan, Zhongguo caitao tu pu [Handbook of Chinese Painted Pottery Illustrations] (Beijing: Wenwu chubanshe, 1990), no. 267.
