Label Text: 32Q: 1100 60’s Experiment , written 2015
Born in Hamburg, Germany, Gego immigrated to Venezuela in 1939, where she became a leading figure in the mid-century abstraction movement and was awarded numerous public sculpture commissions. Trained as an architect and engineer, Gego focused her artistic practice on ethereal spatial structures, which she explored in sculptures, prints, and drawings. She preferred modest materials, connecting fine metal wires by hand into a “net” that she shaped into forms, such as an enormous, hanging sphere. Gego’s drawings depict the simple, precise repetition of the knotted wires defining her sculptures, and are executed with a draftsman’s steady but imperfect hand. This work captures the idea of lines suspended in space evident in her Choros (Streams) series of hanging sculptures from the early 1970s. Those pieces feature long, flowing, vertical, stainless steel wires joined with delicate circular hooks, rendered here in lines of ink.
