Description
Fifteen prints (five by each artist) housed in black portfolio case.
Commentary
This portfolio includes fifteen works by Judith Rothschild, Frank Bacher, and Sheri Martinelli. Its acquisition will fill a significant gap, for none of these artists are currently represented in the Prints Department. The Drawings Department owns only one large Rothschild. An Art Digest review of the portfolio in December 1946 described the group as "Three up-and-coming modernists." Judith Rothschild's bold abstractions with their strong black outlines and textured colors mirror her paintings of the same period. Frank Bacher's more rigidly geometric serigraphs are absolutely flat. Sheri Martinelli's highly-worked, velvety etchings provide a sculptural counterpoint to both Rothschild and Bacher's serigraphs. Martinelli is now also known in literary circles as a protégée of Anais Nin, a correspondent with Charles Bukowski, and the muse of Ezra Pound.
