NOTE: The Herbert Gallery provenance was supplied by the artist, see his letter in the curatorial file. "Lois Orswell David Smith and Modern Art" suggests the drawing may have been purchased at the Bertha Shaefer Gallery, per the artist, he wasn't represented by the Shaefer Gallery until 1963.
