Technical Observations: The patina is green with brown accretions. The accretions appear old and are likely from burial. Scratches in this layer are from modern cleaning.

The proper left edge around the front to the first joint of the larger toe is a finished cast edge. The rest of the edge is a break where this fragment was torn from the sculpture. Wax application marks at the back were made with a spatula-like tool. The wax applied to the mold almost filled the relief areas, such as the toes, resulting in a bronze thickness of up to 1.2 cm. Other areas are as thin as 2 mm. Numerous spherical nodules (1-2 mm) on the interior are the result of air bubbles in the investment material that was applied to the wax model. There is a partially intact 2 x 3 mm iron core pin at the top of the foot. The toenail details, although slightly crude, appear to have been modeled in the wax model.

Descriptions

Published Catalogue Text: Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Bronzes at the Harvard Art Museums
This fragment represents the final two toes of a life-size left foot, with the second-from-last toe bent around the little toe. A finished edge along the right side of the larger toe suggests that it was separate from the next one. Part of the cast edge continues around the little toe, all the way along the outside of the foot, suggesting that the foot was completely hollow. Toes and nails are cursorily drawn, no doubt in the wax model. Partial downturning at the arch on the right side would give the foot a maximum width of c. 9.5 cm, indicating that this was a life-size statue.
