Descriptions

Description
This fragment of wall painting depicts an architectural feature on a red background. On the right, is a column capital rendered in white with hints of grey and pink for shading and highlight. Behind the capital, a band of dark red/purple indicates overlap and spatial recession.
Commentary
Brightly colored wall paintings often decorated the interior, and sometimes exterior, of Roman buildings. The fragment shown is just one small part of a much larger decorative scheme that would have covered an entire wall. The column seen in this fragment is characteristic of the detailed architectural scenes that decorated compositions from the late first century BCE onwards.
