Fragment of a Right Foot
The fore part of the bottom of the shoe is smooth, while the rear part at the instep is hollowed out, and the back is broken away.
This would appear to be the foot from a small seated statue of a Roman emperor, official, or citizen dressed in civic rather than military garb. The shoe consisted of an outer part tied across the ankle and an inner tongue that ended in an upper molding, where the drapery of the garment appears to have begun.
A lady as the Hera of Polykleitos, in Boston, has her left foot protruding forward and slightly downward, in a pose similar to that of this fragment. She is, of course, wearing only a sandal with straps (Comstock, Vermeule, 1976, p. 95, no. 148).
