Print of figures gathered around door

Several figures stand inside a dark doorway on the left side of this image. They appear nicely dressed in suits and decorative hats. The door opens onto an exterior street. A figure sits on the curb to the left, and more figures stand on the sidewalk. There is a marquee on the wall to the right. A horse-drawn carriage stands in the street. This image is drawn in thick strokes of graphite, so the scene is suggested with gesture and density of shading rather than detailed features. Whistler’s “butterfly” signature appears to the left of the door.
