A woman draped in robes and head covering holds a baby in her lap, her hands clasped in front.

The woman (Virgin Mary) is seated with her right knee up to form an incline for the baby to be upright. Her head leans toward the right, looking out, lips slightly parted, no smile. The baby (Christ Child) is awake, hands out, wrapped in a blanket with a placid face, and chubby cheeks. Light enters the scene from the top. There appears to be an upside-down human face sketched into the drapery on her left knee, possibly her reflection. The background is a suggestion of clouds with faint lines emanating from the Virgin and Child.
