504 Openwork Plaque with Animal Mask
Light brown, partly discolored jade with a glossy finish, identically engraved on both sides. From the animal mask in the center issue two bands which curve downward and unite in a wider band below, as if the head were enclosed by a ring-shaped body. Above this body extend two clawed feet and, at the sides, two wing-like elements. Two pointed curls on the inner rim of the band adjoin the mask. Texturing is sparingly used: median lines and double curves on the divided bands; a few curls and cross-hatched areas on the wide band below. A small loop at the top is broken off. Late Eastern Chou.
