441 Contorted Feline
Light greenish gray, translucent, partly calcified jade. The plano-convex piece presents a feline with an angular nose, pointed ears, and a convolute lower jaw. They eyes, carved in high relief, are remarkably alive and expressive. The body forms an S -curve terminating in a pointed hook. The creature bites the tip of an appendage against which rests one of his feet; another foot issues from the opposite side and reaches up to the neck. Below this second foot is a bifurcated appendage, like a wing or tail of a bird, that touches the back of the tail. The various parts of the body are rendered in slight relief, and the surface is sparingly decorated with finely incised designs. Later Eastern Chou.
