Descriptions

Description
Shallow circular dish supported by a slender cylindrical pedestal that flares at the base; underside of dish gently rounded, with sides rising to a slightly everted rim; white stoneware with transparent glaze faintly tinged with a pale celadon green color; glaze covers entire dish and pedestal down to the foot; underside of pedestal base unglazed. From northern China, possibly from the kilns at Gongyi, Henan province. One of a pair with 2006.170.241.2.
Commentary
Compare to:
Celadon pedestal dish of closely related form excavated in 1953 from a Sui period tomb at Mafangshan, Wuchang, Hubei province, now in the Hubei Provincial Museum. See Zhongguo taoci quanji [The Complete Works of Chinese Ceramics], vol. 5: Sui, Tang [Sui and Tang dynasties] (Shanghai: Shanghai renmin meishu chubanshe, 2000), no. 45, pp. 72 and 230.
