Inscriptions and Marks
  • inscription: upper edge, lower one half of sheet, printer's ink, letterpress, Dutch: D'Arminiaensche uytvaert. Boere Praetjen: Over D'Arminiaensche uyt-vaert Gehouden den VI. Julij 1619. [The print is titled, subtitled, and accompanied by a long text, largely in the form of a dialogue between two farmers (identified as Kees and Joost), but also with a key to the letters that mark the wagons leaving The Hague. The key identifies the individual passengers in the nine wagons, and it then goes on to date a subsequent event (19 July 1619) concerning others who were not in the wagons.]
  • legend: within the etching, printer's ink, etching, Dutch, signed, in artist's hand: The publisher, persumably also the artist, has included his monogram and also identifying inscriptions "Kees" and "Joost" on his protagonists and identifying letters over each wagon, keyed to the letterpress text below. The Hague, viewed in the distance, is also identified.
