Description
Large cylindrical cup with waisted midsection, loop handle, and flat base; white earthenware. Dawenkou culture. From the middle and lower Yellow River valley regions; Shandong, northern Jiangsu, northern Anhui, and eastern Henan provinces.
Commentary
Compare to:
1) Earthenware cup of related form excavated at Dawenkou, Tai’an county, Shandong province, now in the National History Museum, Beijing. See Zhongguo taoci quanji (The Complete Works of Chinese Ceramics), vol. 1: Xinshiqi shidai (Neolithic period) (Shanghai: Shanghai renmin meishu chubanshe, 2000), no. 163, pp. 181 and 301.
2) Slightly smaller earthenware cup of related form excavated in 1959 at Dawenkou, Tai’an, Shandong province, now in the Shandong Museum. See Shandong sheng wenwu guanlichu [Shandong Bureau of Cultural Relics Management], Dawenkou: xinshiqi shidai muzang fajue baogao [Dawenkou: Neolithic period cemetery excavation report] (Beijing: Wenwu chubanshe, 1974), 73:6.
