Descriptions

Description
Deep bowl with wide mouth raised on a tall stem supported on a broad circular concave foot with neatly molded upturned edge, the lower sides of the bowl with concave grooves and the well-fitted domed cover similarly grooved, the large circular platform finial also grooved and raised on a reel-shaped stem, the dark gray pottery burnished to a smooth black surface and showing scattered remains of earth encrustation and staining from burial. One of a pair with 2006.170.144.A-B.
Commentary
Compare to:
(1) Large, covered dou vessel of similar form and design excavated in 2012-2013 from a mid-Warring States period (4th century BCE) tomb in Guxiang cemetery, Linying county, Luohe, Henan province. See Wenwu [Cultural Relics] 8 (2015): 8, fig. 9.
(2) Very similar but slightly smaller covered ceramic dou attributed to the Warring States period in the Metropolitan Museum of Art collection, New York (accession no. 50.61.9). See Suzanne G. Valenstein, A Handbook of Chinese Ceramics, 2nd ed. (New York: Metropolitan Museum of New York, 1989), 30, fig. 25.
