An elderly woman sits in profile facing right. She wears a white bonnet and a dark shawl. Her head is bent down, and she looks toward her lap, where she holds a piece of cloth or paper. She sits in a small, dark, crowded room. She is surrounded by piles of fabric. Shelves cover most of the walls behind her. They are full of containers, bottles, and baskets, perhaps suggesting that this room is a kitchen. At the closest point of the foreground is a rough-edged doorway, creating the impression that the viewer is peering into the room.
