Creature Feature: Merpeople!

This painting shows a pale woman with auburn hair wearing a crown of pink flowers. She bends toward the string instrument she is playing with a vacant look in her eyes. Her flowing, soft yellow dress exposes her shoulders as her bare arm reaches across the center of the painting. She is surrounded by fruits and flowers in the background, and a large dove sits just above her head with wings bent as if about to take flight.
Dante Gabriel Rossetti, British, A Sea-Spell, 1875–77. Oil on canvas. Harvard Art Museums/Fogg Museum, Gift of Grenville L. Winthrop, Class of 1886, 1939.92.
