Materials Lab Workshop: Carbon

Peach Black, Carbon Black, Manufactured by Lefranc, 1927.
Harvard Art Museums/Straus Center for Conservation and Technical Studies, The Forbes Pigment Collection, Straus.25.

Workshop

Harvard Art Museums
32 Quincy Street, Cambridge, MA

This workshop will focus on carbon, inspired by Wolfgang Tillmans’s creative use of photocopiers in works featured in the exhibition Folding Refraction, Touch: Modern and Contemporary Art in Dialogue with Wolfgang Tillmans (August 27, 2016–January 8, 2017). The fifth most abundant element in the universe, carbon is a key component of many media, including graphite, charcoal, and sumi-e ink, and plays a role in artistic processes such as photocopying and using printing toner.

Francesca Bewer, research curator for conservation and technical studies, along with guest experts, will lead this exploration of carbon in art. The workshop will combine close looking at select objects in the collections with hands-on experimentation in the museums’ Materials Lab, a space designed to encourage the investigation of materials and techniques used in works of art.

The event will be held in the Materials Lab, Lower Level.

$15 materials fee. Registration is required and payment must be made in advance. Please email am_visitorservices@harvard.edu or stop by the museums’ admissions desk to register. Space is limited to 15 participants. Minimum age of 14.
