Once decorating the interiors of wealthy Roman homes, ancient Roman wall paintings are among the most luxurious and colorful artifacts to remain from antiquity, yet they often survive only in fragments. This session will focus on a wall painting fragment from the Roman imperial villa at Boscotrecase in southern Italy, created at the turn of the first century CE. Led by Elizabeth Molacek, the Frederick Randolph Grace Curatorial Fellow in Ancient Art, the seminar will examine the painting’s ancient context and modern biography and will subsequently explore the way in which even small fragments can illuminate our understanding of the sumptuous spaces in the ancient world.

The seminar will take place in the Art Study Center, Level 4.
