Quantum Grids takes the offer of two exceptional long-term loans, Sol LeWitt’s 1978 Four Part Geometric Structure and Yayoi Kusama’s 1967 three-panel oil Accretions II, as an incentive to showcase a previously unexhibited, equally exceptional Fogg painting, The Century with Mushroom Clouds (1996) by Cai Guo-Qiang, and a newly acquired work by Fred Tomaselli, Guilty (2005). Although these four artworks differ considerably in form and content, each artist uses the grid as an ordering device. This use is often identified with LeWitt and minimalist thinking, but it is equally essential to the works by Kusama, Tomaselli, and Cai Guo-Qiang, in which it helps to contain an array of gestures that might otherwise feel random. Organized by Linda Norden, associate curator of contemporary art, Fogg Museum. A brochure accompanies this exhibition.
