Dante’s masterwork is widely considered to be the first poetic work in which scientific and philosophical themes were given central place. In that same spirit, the artists in this three-part exhibition examine social, scientific, and spatial interactions in the world. Olafur Eliasson presents 50-plus instruments, machines, and other objects that challenge systems of knowledge and our perception of the world. Tomás Saraceno displays Cloud City—an inflatable module with embedded solar technology and environmental sensors. Ai Weiwei’s installation of 5,335 backpacks commemorates the schoolchildren who died as a result of China’s major earthquake in May 2008, and is accompanied by a voice recording reciting the names of the victims. All three installations explore the realms in which art, architecture, and design intersect. Organized by the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and the Harvard Art Museums.
