Inscriptions and Marks
  • inscription: top margin of each sheet, brown ink: Pagination from an earlier binding within a collection: Jo 98 e. -Jo 105 e. All of the sheets in this series have stitch marks at their left edge and coloring at their other three edges, which indicates the former binding of this series within a larger volume. In fact Paul Prouté, from whom this series was purchased, had a number of Northern Mannerist engraving sets of the same sheet size for sale; evidently it was that print dealer who disassembled the volume.
  • watermark: on each sheet: Grapes? [array of nine beads: seven in a circle, one in the center, and one pendant]
  • legend: lower plate margin of each print, printer's ink, engraved: Title on the first plate, with biblical quotations; biblical quotations on subsequent plates. See records for the individual prints for the biblical citations. See entries for individual plates.
